Comparison

Seestar S30 Pro vs S50 Pro (and the Original S30 and S50)

ZWO's two Pro models share the same 4K telephoto and wide-angle cameras. The difference is aperture, focal length, field of view, battery and weight. Which to buy, and how both compare with the original S30 and S50.

Our pick

Seestar

Seestar S50 Pro

8.0/10 research score

50 mm at 260 mm, a near-zero-backlash drive and a 10,000 mAh battery, for $999.

Seestar

Seestar S30 Pro

7.7/10 research score

30 mm at 160 mm with a 4.6° field, in a 3.6 lb body, for $699.

Seestar

Seestar S50

7.3/10 research score

The discontinued original: 50 mm, 1080p sensor, no wide camera.

The short answer

Choose the S50 Pro ($999) for more light (2.8 times the S30 Pro's), a longer 260 mm focal length for small galaxies and the Moon, and a 9-hour battery rating. Choose the S30 Pro ($699) for travel, big nebulae and a wider 4.6° field at 3.6 lb. The originals are sold out; buy them used only if the price is right.

Both Seestar Pro models have the same 4K telephoto and wide-angle cameras, 4-element apochromatic lenses, built-in filters, 128 GB storage and EQ mode. ZWO's own comparison says they serve "different astrophotography priorities rather than represent a simple base-to-upgrade product pair". The differences come down to aperture, focal length, battery and weight. We compared ZWO's specs with hands-on reviews; we have not tested them ourselves. See how we research.

Light and detail

The S50 Pro's 50 mm lens collects about 2.78 times the light of the S30 Pro's 30 mm, according to ZWO, and its 260 mm focal length makes small targets larger in the frame. AstroBackyard calls the S50 Pro "the performance choice" for compact targets and lunar detail. Digital Camera World notes the S50 Pro still has "not enough focal length for planets".

Field of view

The S30 Pro's 4.6° telephoto field is about 1.6 times wider than the S50 Pro's 2.8°. ZWO says that makes the S30 Pro better for framing the Orion Nebula, Rosette Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy with their surroundings, without mosaics. AstroBackyard agrees the S30 Pro "remains better for large nebulae and travel". Both can stitch mosaics for bigger targets.

Battery, tracking and weight

The S50 Pro's 10,000 mAh battery is rated for up to 9 hours against the S30 Pro's 6, and Digital Camera World's unit lasted over six hours without running out. ZWO says the S50 Pro also has a "near-zero-backlash" precision drive for steadier tracking in EQ mode. The trade-off is weight: 2.8 kg against 1.65 kg. ZWO says the S30 Pro fits "into a standard backpack or camera bag"; Digital Camera World found the S50 Pro less camera-bag friendly.

What about the original S30 and S50?

Both were sold out at ZWO in October 2026, and ZWO has discontinued the S50. Their 1080p sensors give much smaller images than either Pro, and the S50 has no wide-angle camera. AstroBackyard calls the S50 "the value pick" if you find one cheaply; check that a used unit is the international version.

Which should you buy?

  • S50 Pro if you want the most detail on galaxies, clusters and the Moon, run long or scheduled sessions, and don't mind 6.2 lb. Read the review.
  • S30 Pro if you travel, hike or fly with your scope, mostly image large nebulae, or want to save $300. Read the review.

Frequently asked questions

Is the S50 Pro better than the S30 Pro?

For small galaxies, clusters and the Moon, yes; it gathers about 2.8 times as much light and has a longer focal length. For large nebulae and travel, the S30 Pro's wider field and lighter body can be the better fit. ZWO itself says the two are designed for "different imaging priorities", not as base and upgrade.

Do the S30 Pro and S50 Pro have the same sensor?

Both have a 1/1.2-inch 8.3 MP (4K) telephoto sensor and the same 4K 63° wide-angle camera. The S30 Pro's telephoto sensor is a Sony IMX585; the S50 Pro's is an OmniVision OS08B10.

Should I upgrade from the S50 to the S50 Pro?

If you want a wider frame, sharper edges, a wide-angle camera, a 9-hour battery rating and 128 GB, the S50 Pro is a big step up. The aperture stays at 50 mm, so faint-target performance improves through the sensor and drive rather than more light.
