Research, not hands-on testing

SmartTelescopes reviews and compares smart telescopes using manufacturer documents, published measurements and owner reports, as explained in how we research. Unless an article says otherwise, we have not tested the product ourselves. Real-world results depend on your sky and setup: light pollution, the Moon, weather and seeing, the target's position, your exposure time and settings, and how the telescope is set up and maintained.

Not professional advice

Our troubleshooting guides cover common, low-risk fixes. They are not a substitute for the manufacturer's instructions or a qualified technician.

  • The Sun: never point a telescope, its finder or any optical aid at the Sun without a certified solar filter fitted as the maker instructs. Concentrated sunlight can blind you instantly and can destroy the camera sensor. Check the filter for damage before every use.
  • Children: supervise children around the telescope, especially in daylight, so nobody looks at or aims it toward the Sun.
  • Batteries and power banks: do not open, puncture or charge a damaged battery. Follow the maker's charging instructions, and let a cold battery warm up before charging it.
  • Tripods and mounts: set the tripod on firm, level ground and within the weight limit, so the telescope cannot tip over.
  • Observing at night: choose a safe place to set up, away from traffic and edges, and tell someone where you are when observing alone.
  • Opening or repairing a telescope may void its warranty. Check the warranty terms first.

Accuracy

We check facts against their sources and correct mistakes we find or are told about, but specifications, prices, firmware and availability change, and makers sometimes update products without notice. Confirm important details with the maker or store before you buy.
