Seestar Firmware Update Failed or Stuck? How to Retry Safely

ZWO lists three causes of failed Seestar firmware updates: low battery, full storage and an unstable connection. How Seestar updates work, how to retry safely, what the lights mean during an update, and when to contact ZWO.

Quick fix

Charge the Seestar well above 30%, free some storage, update the Seestar app first, stay within a few meters of the telescope and keep the app open. If the update fails, restart the Seestar and try again, as ZWO advises. Never switch it off while the power light is blinking yellow quickly.

Seestar firmware updates are delivered through the Seestar app: when your phone connects to the telescope, the app checks for new firmware and prompts you to install it. ZWO's S50 FAQ names the usual reasons an update fails: "Battery low, insufficient storage, unstable network". These steps follow ZWO's FAQ and manuals and apply to the S30, S30 Pro, S50 and S50 Pro.

Before you retry

  1. Charge it. ZWO's app only offers the upgrade when the battery is above 30%. Start well above that, or plug in the charger.
  2. Free some storage. A full Seestar can fail to update. Transfer images to a computer by USB-C or over Wi-Fi and delete what you don't need.
  3. Update the Seestar app first. New firmware usually needs the latest app. Update it from the App Store or Google Play while your phone is on home internet.
  4. Have internet available. ZWO says internet is needed for firmware updates. While your phone is connected to the Seestar's own Wi-Fi it has no internet over Wi-Fi, so keep mobile data on, or put the Seestar in Station Mode on your home network.
  5. Stay close and keep the app open. Keep your phone within a few meters of the Seestar and don't switch apps, lock the phone or walk away until it finishes.

During the update: read the lights

On the S50 Pro, ZWO's manual says the yellow power light blinks rapidly while the firmware upgrades, then returns to its normal state. When the update finishes, the Seestar reboots automatically. Other models behave similarly. Do not switch it off while the light is blinking fast.

If the update fails

ZWO's advice is simple: restart the Seestar and try again.

  1. Close the Seestar app completely.
  2. Switch the Seestar off (hold the power button for about 2–3 seconds; hold 6 seconds only if it won't respond).
  3. Charge it if the battery is low, and free storage if it's nearly full.
  4. Switch it on, reconnect in the app and accept the update again.

If the app can't connect after a failed update, work through Seestar won't connect, starting with the Wi-Fi reset button on the bottom of the telescope.

If it seems stuck

Updates can take several minutes. If the light is still blinking fast, wait. If nothing has changed for a long time (for example 20–30 minutes) and the app shows no progress, restart the app first and reconnect; it may simply have lost the connection. Force the Seestar off with a 6-second hold only as a last resort, because interrupting an update can leave it unusable until support helps.

When to contact ZWO

Contact ZWO through seestar.com if:

  • the update fails repeatedly with a full battery and free storage,
  • the power light shows a boot failure (red blinking with all four battery lights flashing rapidly, on the S50 Pro), or
  • the Seestar won't connect at all after an update.

Include your model, serial number, app version and a photo or video of the lights.

Still not working?

If the fixes above don’t help and your telescope is out of warranty, a repair can cost more than a replacement. Compare current models before you pay for parts.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to install Seestar firmware updates?

No. ZWO says the app never forces a firmware update and you can skip or postpone it, but skipping updates for a long time "may cause compatibility issues or certain features to stop working properly".

Why did my Seestar app update by itself?

ZWO says the app does not force updates; automatic app updates come from your phone's App Store or Google Play settings. You can turn them off there and update manually when you choose.

How much battery does a Seestar need for a firmware update?

ZWO's S50 FAQ says the app prompts for a firmware upgrade when needed and the battery is over 30%. Starting well above that, or with the charger connected, avoids interruptions.

Can I install Seestar firmware from another source?

Don't. ZWO's warranty excludes damage from unauthorized firmware flashing or installing the wrong firmware. Use only the update offered in the Seestar app.
