About Seestar

Seestar is the smart-telescope brand of ZWO, a Chinese company best known for its ASI astronomy cameras and ASIAIR controllers. The Seestar S50 (2023) turned smart telescopes from a $2,000-plus niche into a $500 product, and Seestar now has one of the largest owner communities of any smart-telescope brand, which means more tutorials, forum answers and third-party accessories.

Every Seestar has a duo-band light-pollution filter and a dark filter built in, a magnetic solar filter, autofocus, FITS files and support for EQ mode on a tilting head such as ZWO's TH10. The S30 Pro and S50 Pro add a 4K wide-angle camera for Milky Way and landscape shots.

Strengths and weak points

Seestars are the easiest smart telescopes to recommend: the app is polished, setup is automatic, and the prices undercut most rivals. The weak points are short focal lengths for planets, a closed system (no external filters or camera upgrades), and EQ mode needing a separate head. The most-searched Seestar problems are firmware updates, calibration and Wi-Fi connections; our guides cover connection problems, failed firmware updates and GoTo and compass calibration.

Where to buy

Seestars are sold on seestar.com and through retailers including Amazon. Buy the overseas (international) version: ZWO says China-version units can only be activated in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, and are not covered by warranty elsewhere.

Seestar questions

Who makes Seestar telescopes?

ZWO, a Chinese maker of astronomy cameras and the ASIAIR controller. Seestar is its smart-telescope brand; each Seestar contains an ASIAIR-style controller, camera, focuser, filters and mount in one body.

Which Seestar should I buy?

For most people, the S30 Pro ($699) for portability and a 4K sensor, or the S50 Pro ($999) for more aperture, a longer focal length and a 9-hour battery rating. The S30 ($399) and S50 ($499) were sold out at ZWO in October 2026, and ZWO has discontinued the S50.

Is the Seestar S50 discontinued?

Yes. ZWO announced it at NEAF 2026, and it was sold out on seestar.com in October 2026. The S50 Pro replaces it.
